Description by the author

From Bemelen (guesthouse), the route leads over the Margraten plateau towards Noorbeek, to reach the climb to the hamlet Ulvend in the Voer region. After that, you travel through the land of Herve and climb up to the ridge north of Aubel (the climb is referred to as Magis). Then you head towards the ridge on which the town of Hervé is located. You need to pass through the bustling Hervé, but the section through the busier streets is only half a kilometer long, as Hervé is ideally bypassed via side streets. This sometimes means narrow, unclear back roads where farmers occasionally drive their cows to the pastures. You descend via Jose, and then you climb up to Xhendelesse and head to Olne. A long descent follows on good asphalt into the valley of the Vesdre River.

Surrounding the valley of the Vesdre are pearls of climbs and leg-biting, where you successively tackle the beautiful Côte de Trasenster (north side, with bumpy/moderate asphalt, but manageable in the ascending direction), the steep Rue sur Steppes (which received completely new asphalt in 2018), Les Forges (not via the main road, which also means a section of 16%), and finally the beautiful Côte de la Forêt. While the main road in the valley of the Vesdre is busy, you only follow it for a maximum distance of 1.5 km.

Returning over the land of Hervé, you must pass through a ridge with buildings again (this busy passage is also no longer than 2 km). Between Saint Hadelin and Ayeneux, the route runs down a narrow side road where you need to be a bit cautious. After that, you head towards Bolland. In Bolland, you confront the steep Thier Fouarge, and further into the Voer region, the Côte de Neufchateau (with a beautiful view at the summit). Upon reaching the Netherlands, you will also tackle the Heiweg, the climb to Sint-Geertruid, the short but momentarily steep Oerenberg (15%), and finally the Bemelerberg.

Especially on the return journey between Forêt and Warsage, there is a constant up and down, with occasionally longer climbs in between. This section makes the ride a challenge.

Most roads have good to very good asphalt. Only in some sections (in the land of Herve) is the asphalt poor. However, you sometimes travel over winding, narrow back roads (north of Herve and between Saint Hadelin and Ayeneux). Do not ride the route in the opposite direction, as you will then encounter steep and sometimes dangerous descents.
