The Vegesack City Church is the house of worship and community center of the United Evangelical Protestant Congregation in Bremen-Vegesack in the Bremen district of Vegesack.
With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the village of Vegesack became part of Bremen. At the same time, the population's desire for their own church arose, but the French occupation hindered these plans. In 1812, shortly after liberation, the slowly growing port town had 1,379 inhabitants, who were parishioners either of Blumenthal or Lesum and had to cover long distances to their churches. In 1815, Dr. jur. August Christian Wilmanns was appointed as the first Amtmann (district administrator) of Vegesack. He initiated the founding of the United Evangelical Protestant Congregation in Bremen-Vegesack. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation on October 31, 1817, the Vegesack adherents of the Lutheran and Reformed faiths united into a joint congregation, following the Prussian model. The construction of a church for Vegesack was also initiated by Wilmanns. The construction costs were fully covered by donations from the village, the city of Bremen, and from outside, with the foundation stone laid on June 13, 1819, by Wilmanns and the pastor of St. Ansgarii, Johann Heinrich Bernhard Dräseke.
