Beaune was the birthplace of Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), a renowned mathematician. Gaspard Monge, or the Count of Péluse, was a French mathematician known for formulating descriptive geometry, the scientific drawing. Monge played a significant role in the French Revolution and co-founded the École polytechnique in 1794. In 1800, he moved to Antwerp and established the Higher Maritime School of Antwerp. He is one of the 72 Frenchmen whose names are inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.
