The hike through the Samaria gorge on Crete is a great, intense experience! It is the narrowest canyon in the world. The beginning of the gorge is at 1240 meters altitude, near the village of Omalos. First one has to descend 1200 meters to start the beautiful walk. In some places the gorge is only 4 meters wide with rock walls 500 meters high. If you are going to walk through the Samaria Gorge, think of good sturdy shoes and a cap or hat against the sun. The narrowest point is called the Iron Gate. The end of the canyon ends at the Libyan Sea.
