The sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietralba is one of the main sanctuaries in South Tyrol, located at 1,520 m above sea level, between the villages of Nova Ponente and Monte San Pietro.
The sanctuary was founded in 1553, after the discovery of the miraculous statuette, an alabaster Pietà, carried out by a local farmer, Leonhard Weißensteiner, to whom the Virgin Mary would have appeared, healing him from his illness. By way of thanksgiving, Our Lady would ask him to erect a chapel, where those who wanted to could go to praise and invoke her. This chapel soon became very popular, so much so that it was necessary to build a larger building; A real church.
