Free parking at the entrance.
There is the option to cover the distances with a shuttle bus instead of on foot. Definitely recommended when it is very hot, because in the end only the Temple of Hera and the Acropolis are the only visible remains.
The city, which was founded in the 7th century BC, was eventually abandoned over time and buried under sand and vegetation , including the temples. The remains of Selinunte were only rediscovered by archaeologists in the 19th century . Only a small part has been excavated.
The site is very extensive and divided into 3 zones that are quite far apart: the temple zone, the acropolis and the sanctuary of Malophoros. The latter consists only of ruins.
We first walk to the temple zone with the temple of Hera as the most spectacular remains of the entire site. Some life-size replicas of tools show how the heavy building blocks were brought here from the Cave of Cusa miles away .
Some collections are exhibited in the Antiquarium, a little further away. From here you can take the shuttle to the Acropolis for the first time.
Those who take the shuttle will first continue to the sanctuary of Malophoros where the remains of the Sanctuary of Hera can also be seen.
The shuttle now returns to the Acropolis where a colonnade of the Appolo temple attracts the most attention, but we also see old impressive walls that defended the acropolis.
From here it goes back towards the entrance/exit.
This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours that depart from Balestrate and Sambucco di Sicilia and are described in "Discover all the sights of western Sicily through day trips"
Be sure to consult the information about the sights once you are there . They explain what you will see!
