Around 1300, a church with farms was located at this cemetery. The cemetery was, alongside the burial site in Naarden, initially the only cemetery in the Gooi region. After the Reformation, the Catholic church had to disappear. The cemetery remained a place of pilgrimage. Even today, on the first Sunday after St. John's Day on June 24, the St. John's procession goes from the St. John's Basilica in Laren to this burial site.
