The Ecocathedral is a land art project near the Frisian village of Mildam, in the Dutch municipality of Heerenveen. The Ecocathedral, located just north of Mildam, is intended as a workshop where long-term processes between humans and nature are studied. By stacking paving stones and other excess construction materials in a special way, the flora and fauna can go about their natural course. The first ecocathedral is situated on a plot of land amidst the forests of Mildam, municipality of Heerenveen. The project was initiated in the 1970s by philosopher/'ecotect'/landscape architect Louis le Roy. The intention is for the project to continue until the year 3000. This time is necessary to study the processes that continue endlessly. To ensure continuity, the Stichting Tijd (Time Foundation) was established in 2001, which also aims to initiate similar processes both domestically and abroad.
