The access bridge to Fort Diefdijk is a so-called crane bridge that leads to the Werk op de spoorweg at the Diefdijk.
A crane bridge is a bridge of which part can be turned away. This prevented the bridge itself, like a folding bridge, from being a target for enemy fire. The crane bridge and Fort Werk aan het Spoor were built in 1880. This type is an invention of railway engineer F.C. Conrad.
