History
Fort at IJmuiden controls the access to the North Sea Canal. The fort has three floors and had a unique armored battery with five heavy cannons for coastal defense and an armored turret with two cannons for the defense of the locks and the North Sea Canal. The isolated fort island has been off-limits for a long time and still maintains a mysterious atmosphere.

The fort at IJmuiden was constructed between 1880 and 1887 and was originally located on the northern shore of the mouth of the North Sea Canal. Due to the widening of the canal in the 1920s, the fort became situated on an island. In 1910, the position of IJmuiden was reinforced with two coastal batteries and two land batteries. During the German occupation, the fort island became 'Core Work' within the 'Festung IJmuiden'. The armored turret and the cannons were removed and melted down by the German occupiers, but the armored gallery has remained.
