Description by the author

Heul veul Geul, Brabants for a lot of Geul, is a route that follows the river Geul and goes over the many climbs on both sides of the Geuldal. The route starts in Rothem near the church, but can also be started at any other place on the route, such as the Amstel Gold Race experience center in Valkenburg, from the large parking lot of Wittem Monastery, from the parking of the swimming pool in Gulpen or from the many parking lots in the Vijlenerbos.

The route first follows the Geul upstream, and that means climbs on the northern and eastern side of the Geul valley. Sometimes a trip is made away from the Geuldal so that the route on the way there does not overlap with the way back. The following climbs are on your path (starting from Rothem) in the Dutch part on the way there:
Vauwerberg (or In den Schreub)
Ravensbosch
Goudsberg
Holleweg Schin op Geul
Schaapsdries
Elkenraderweg
Kruisberg (from Eys)
Elzeterberg
Pannisberg
Camerig (only the second part!)
Wolfhaag Pass

The route now enters Belgium and you are now away from the Geuldal. But the beautifully paved cycle path over a former railway line (RAVeL 39) takes you from Gemmenich to Plombières and back into the catchment area of the Geul, or La Gueulle as it is called in French. And further on you even come to a piece of German-speaking Belgium near Kelmis, where the river is called Die Göhl and you follow the river here on a free-lying well-paved cycle path (RAVeL 39A) from Kelmis to Moresnet. In the Belgian part you get the following climbs for the wheels:
Belle Vue or Rue du Casino (excluding the first 250 meters)
Rue du Viaduc
Short steep climb in RAVeL 39A,
First part of Rue de Beusdael

You come back to the Netherlands and you now follow the Geul downstream, and cross the Geul again, where you get the following climbs on the east side of the Geul:

Bommerigerweg
Hurpesch (second part)

You descend the lower part of the Hurpesch and cross the Geul again and now you get climbs on the western side / southern side of the Geul (including three calf biters):
Schweiberg (just not to the top, you turn left into the Gulperweg to cross to Eperheide)
Eperheide (second part)
Gulperberg (from Gulpen)
Plettenberg from Wittem
Eyserbosweg
Dead Man
Daalhemmerweg
Lindenstraat
Geulhemmerberg

You descend the Kuitenberg to Maastricht and then you are quickly at the start / end point Rothem.
