Drifting dunes Deelen

Bults like you see here in the forest are on the Veluwe or burial mounds and or drifting dunes like here. These hills in the forest are small drifting dunes that are overgrown with forest, so that the drifting sand is captured with the roots of the vegetation. Because there are so many together here and are also irregular in shape, they are most likely not burial mounds. Early residents often built their homes on the edge of the stream valleys. The burial mounds were near their settlements

Hoenderloo was founded in 1839, through the efforts of Reverend Heldring. Until then, it only consisted of a number of scattered huts near sand drifts and moors. Heldring had a well, a school and a few years later the Heldring church built there.

In 1851, partly on the initiative of Heldring, the forerunner of the later institution for inpatient youth care, the Hoenderloo Group, was founded. At the time, it was an asylum for underprivileged, neglected boys. In the village it was called 'the Boys' House', although in later years it was no longer exclusively for boys. Due to reorganizations in youth care, all activities of the Hoenderloo Group were definitively discontinued in 2020 and after 169 years, the care of young people by the Hoenderlose organization came to an end.
