The Paulus Church was built in the 16th century by Dom Bartolomeu dos Mártires for the Society of Jesus at the Saint James Seminary.
The church is part of the building that houses the Pius XII Museum .
The façade is rather plain and austere, ending in a triangular pediment with a circular window. The church has only one entrance door, framed by columns on the sides and a pediment above. It was designed by André Soares. In contrast to the façade, the interior is stunning and is considered the best collection of Baroque art in the city during the reigns of João Pedro II and V.
There is a single nave with a very large choir. There are several works on display, the most important of which is by Tom Araújo . There are also statues of the four evangelists (by António Pinto Araújo).
