Grobbendonk se hace notar en 2024 en las noticias internacionales con una campaña de pollos. El ayuntamiento de Grobbendonk lanza el proyecto 'Contento con un huevo saludable'. Los habitantes de Grobbendonk y Bouwel pueden recibir dos pollos gratis por dirección del gobierno local. Los pollos deben alimentarse principalmente de desperdicios de cocina y de materia orgánica, además de granos y agua. Deben ser bien cuidados en un gallinero adecuado y mantenidos durante al menos un año. Quien desee pollos gratis debe firmar una especie de carta de compromiso en la que se comprometa a cumplir con estos acuerdos.
¿El objetivo? Los pollos deben ayudar a reducir la montaña de residuos orgánicos. Los huevos son un bono.
"Un pollo puede consumir anualmente alrededor de 50 kg de desperdicios de cocina y de jardín", sabe Bartel Van Riet, quien apoya el proyecto.
