En el siglo XIV, el duque Juan II quería agradecer a los lirenses por sus servicios durante su lucha contra los mechelenses. Podían elegir su recompensa: un mercado de ganado o una universidad. Optaron por el derecho de acopio sobre el ganado, una elección que no le trajo malas consecuencias a Lier, ya que solo se permitía uno por región. Así, el mercado de ganado se trasladó de Wespelaar a Lier y el duque suspiró: "Oh, esos cabezas de oveja". Así surgió el apodo 'cabezas de oveja' para los habitantes de Lier.
