En su libro Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harari describe la situación después de la batalla de Waterloo de una manera muy explícita que puede darnos una idea del horror de la época: "Antes de la llegada del cloroformo, cuatro soldados debían sujetar a un compañero herido mientras el médico amputaba las extremidades dañadas. Justo después de la Batalla de Waterloo (1815) se podían ver montones de manos y piernas amputadas junto a los hospitales de campaña. En esa época, los carpinteros y carniceros que se unían al ejército a menudo eran enviados a la sección médica, ya que la cirugía entonces no requería más que un buen manejo de cuchillos y sierras."
