Esta iglesia no fue construida para convertirse en la catedral de la ciudad . Sólo asumió este estatus en 1834 cuando Brujas se convirtió en diócesis . Sin embargo, el edificio no se parecía mucho a una catedral. Era menos impresionante que la cercana Iglesia de Nuestra Señora.
El exterior da la impresión de un castillo robusto . Este alto edificio gótico no tiene arbotantes sino fuertes contrafuertes .
Interior
Lo más llamativo son los tapices de Bruselas, que fueron tejidos por Jasper van der Borcht en 1731 siguiendo el ejemplo de las pinturas del pintor bruselense Jan van Orley.
Del coro se puede admirar el original del siglo XVII pero reubicado en el siglo XX, y también cabe destacar el órgano de la catedral .
El tríptico con el Martirio de San Hipólito de Dirk Bouts y su estudio cuelga en el museo (llamado tesoro ) de la Catedral de San Salvador.
La catedral también contiene un santuario dedicado a Carlomagno que fue asesinado.
