El Mombeek forma la serpenteante frontera entre Alken y Hasselt. En el punto más profundo del valle, el antiguo Mombeek fluye paralelo a su hermano mayor. El carácter más húmedo de este valle siempre lo ha hecho difícil de acceder. No se podían construir casas y la agricultura moderna también dejó el valle tal como estaba. Hoy es un oasis azul-verde en el fértil paisaje agrícola y de praderas de Haspengouw.
