La batalla de Elchingen entre las fuerzas austriacas y francesas el 14 de octubre de 1805 fue el mayor combate individual durante los enfrentamientos por Ulm al comienzo de la Tercera Guerra Coalition. Condujo al completo cerco del ejército austriaco en Ulm, donde tuvo que rendirse el 20 de octubre de 1805.
En mayo de 1803, el Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda declaró la guerra a los franceses. El pretexto fueron disputas sobre la posesión de Malta, que después del tratado de Amiens debía ser devuelta por los británicos a la Orden de San Juan.
