Este monumento rinde homenaje al insigne granadino, que en su juventud fue compañero del insigne Velázquez, de quien aprendió el difícil arte de la escultura .
Alonso Cano (19 de febrero de 1601 - 3 de septiembre de 1667) fue un pintor, escultor y arquitecto español de la escuela andaluza. Su pintura adquiere un estilo fuertemente luminoso . Con sus figuras escultóricas y alargadas , la mirada de sus pinturas se vuelve elegante.
Fue él quien completó la decoración de la capilla mayor de la catedral y se desempeñó durante un corto tiempo como su principal cuidador hasta su muerte. Entre sus muchas obras , destaca la estatua policromada de la Virgen María en la catedral . Todas sus obras, esculturas y pinturas, son numerosas y famosas y se pueden encontrar en las iglesias y museos de Sevilla.
