Kembs, antigua aldea galo-romana (antiguamente llamada Cambete), se desarrolló a lo largo del eje de una calzada romana que unía Estrasburgo con Augst, en Suiza. Más tarde, Kembs se convirtió en una importante estación de relevo de la Oficina Real de Correos (la herradura de su escudo recuerda esta época). Entre 1928 y 1932, Kembs fue el emplazamiento de la primera de las diez centrales hidroeléctricas que se construyeron en el tramo franco-alemán del Rin, al mismo tiempo que se construía el primer tramo del Gran Canal de Alsacia bajo la dirección del ingeniero Koechlin. Inaugurada el 9 de octubre de 1932 por el Presidente de la República, Albert Lebrun, la central fue destruida durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero fue reconstruida y puesta de nuevo en funcionamiento en 1945.
