Hablando estrictamente, "Big Ben" no se refiere a toda la torre en el Parlamento Británico, sino solo a la gran campana dentro de ella. Hasta septiembre de 2012, el nombre oficial de la estructura era "La Torre de la Campana del Palacio de Westminster". Ahora su nombre oficial es "La Torre de Elizabeth". En la actualidad, nadie sabe con certeza en honor a quién se nombró la campana Big Ben. Una teoría sostiene que era el apodo de un hombre de gran corpulencia que dirigía la fundición de campanas donde se hizo. Otra teoría sugiere que fue nombrada en honor a Benjamin Count, un campeón de boxeo de peso pesado.
