El Rupeliense es, en la escala temporal geológica, la edad más antigua de los dos pisos del Oligoceno. Se extiende en el tiempo entre los 33,9 y los 28,1 millones de años desde el presente. El Rupeliense está precedido por el Priaboniense y es seguido por el Chattiense.
La edad lleva el nombre del pequeño río Rupel de Bélgica, un afluente del Escalda. El Grupo Rupel belga deriva su nombre de la misma fuente. El nombre Rupeliense se introdujo en la literatura científica por el geólogo belga André Hubert Dumont en 1850. La separación entre la grupo y la edad se hizo en la segunda mitad del siglo 20, cuando estratígrafos vieron la necesidad de distinguir entre los nombres de la litoestratigráfica y cronoestratigrafía.
