Ubicado en el antiguo monasterio de los Padres Filippinos , el edificio se estructuraba en torno a tres patios , dos de los cuales aún están intactos, y galerías y capillas privadas que se abrían hacia el interior.
Tiene una de las colecciones arqueológicas más ricas de Italia y evidencia de la historia de Sicilia en todas sus fases, desde la prehistoria hasta la Edad Media.
Entre los numerosos objetos expuestos destaca especialmente la preciosa 'Piedra de Palermo', un texto jeroglífico del 2900 a.C. Las 'Metopas' de los templos de Selinunte; canalones con cabezas de león; hallazgos de la civilización etrusca de Chiusi; el Carnero , estatua de bronce del siglo III a.C.; el grupo en bronce de 'Hércules matando un ciervo', obra romana procedente de Pompeya, etc.
