Se trata de la torre de la ciudad del siglo XIV que forma parte del sistema de transmisión. Construido por la Universitas Palermitana para defender las murallas del "Cassaro", no formaba parte de las estructuras de la iglesia, sino que estaba desconectado y aislado.
La Torre de la Excelencia, quizás la más alta de Palermo , ha perdido su importancia defensiva debido a la expansión urbana de la ciudad. Luego se volvió refinada y perdió su aspecto austero. De hecho, en el segundo nivel se utilizaron vidrieras mediante incrustaciones.
Desde 2013, la Torre San Nicolò está abierta al público con visitas guiadas organizadas por la cooperativa Terradamare.
