La llegada del Teatro Politeama en 1865, que hoy es la prestigiosa sede de la Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana , hizo de este lugar un hito tan importante para la ciudad de Palermo , tanto por su ubicación como por su protagonismo, que incluso las dos grandes plazas Piazza Ruggero Settimo y Piazza Castelnuovo se llaman comúnmente Piazza Politeama.
La plaza representa una de las plazas más populares de la ciudad. Frente al famoso teatro se reúnen parejas, amigos y, sobre todo, patinadores de todos los orígenes.
En 1875, la poderosa familia Florio, que tenía su villa en Piazza Castelnuovo, construyó el Palchetto della musica , destinado a recibir bandas de música para fiestas, ferias y eventos. Sin embargo, el verdadero objetivo de la construcción era evitar que la Piazza Castelnuovo fuera utilizada como vivienda.
