Fue aquí en este jardín botánico en Leiden donde el médico y botánico alemán Philipp Franz von Siebold plantó la caña japonesa. Se trasladó a Batavia en 1822 como cirujano mayor del ejército neerlandés y trajo consigo el Fallopia japonica. Es la planta invasora más agresiva que ahora debemos combatir en nuestra región. Alrededor de 1841, el esqueje comenzó su imparable camino de invasión por todo el continente europeo.
