El área natural en y alrededor de Bemelerberg es tan especial que la Fundación Limburgs Landschap decidió protegerla ya en 1942.
Era y sigue siendo el único lugar de crecimiento en los Países Bajos del gamander de montaña. Esa tradición continúa y también otras flora y fauna, como orquídeas silvestres y mariposas raras, han encontrado su lugar aquí.
Para su gestión se solicita la ayuda de la oveja de Mergelland. Esta pastorea hábilmente las colinas y mantiene el paisaje abierto. Como caminante, disfrutas de vistas espectaculares sobre prados llenos de flores y impresionantes paredes de marga con entradas a las canteras de marga.
Estos espacios subterráneos se han formado a partir de la extracción de marga y hoy en día son utilizados solo por murciélagos.
