Le domaine du château, avec ses forêts, ses rivières et ses vastes terrains de chasse, a été acheté en mai 1840 par le roi Léopold Ier de Belgique à la demande de son épouse la reine Louise Marie. Il fait d’abord construire un pavillon de chasse sur une terrasse surplombant une vallée profondément boisée. Puis, en 1842, il y fait construire un château par son architecte de cour Alphonse Balat. Depuis lors, le château a servi de résidence royale (d’été).
