La Chaux-de-Fonds est une ville suisse du canton de Neuchâtel, située à environ 70 km au nord-ouest de Berne dans le massif du Jura, à 10 km de la frontière avec la France et depuis juin 2009, inscrite avec sa voisine Le Locle au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO pour son « urbanisme horloger » qui reflète les besoins particuliers d'une activité mono-industrielle, entremêlant habitat et ateliers.
La commune a été fondée en 1656 et doit son essor et sa renommée à l'horlogerie et à la microtechnique. Entièrement détruite par un incendie en 1794, la ville a été reconstruite selon un plan en damier qui est aujourd'hui encore une originalité au sein des villes suisses. L'urbanisme particulier et l'activité principalement industrielle a fait dire à Karl Marx que la cité était une « ville-manufacture ». L'architecte Le Corbusier, le navigateur Laurent Bourgnon, l'écrivain Blaise Cendrars et le constructeur d'automobiles Louis Chevrolet y sont nés. Elle est un centre reconnu de l'Art nouveau ayant donné naissance à une forme de cet art connu sous le nom de Style sapin. À ce titre, elle est membre du « Réseau Art Nouveau » européen.
