Le village est situé sur le cours de la rivière Sitter, au pied du massif des Préalpes appenzelloises. Il se trouve à cheval sur les trois districts d'Appenzell, de Schwende et de Rüte.
En 1071, le village est mentionné sous le nom d’Abbacella, puis Abtenzelle, avec la présence d'une métairie et d'une église paroissiale, appartenant au prince-abbé de Saint-Gall. En 1223, apparaît le toponyme Abattiscella qui signifie « la retraite de l’abbé » .
