Le village est situé au sud-ouest de Röderaue, dans une zone lagunaire et à quelques kilomètres de Gröditz. D’Elsterwerda et de Riesa, il y a environ 15 km, 20 de Bad Liebenwerda et Großenhain, et environ 50 de Dresde.
Le nom original du village dérive du sorbier Kozel et c’est parce que beaucoup de ces animaux pouvaient être trouvés dans le village. Au fil des siècles, le nom a subi diverses évolutions : 1388 Kasilwicz, 1406 Kaselwicz, 1476 Kaselbitz, 1522 Kosselbitz, 1540 Kaselitz, 1551 Koselytz, 1875 Koselitz.
