Sous le règne de Philippe II, le corregidor de Cordoue ordonna la construction d'une fontaine pour améliorer l'approvisionnement en eau du quartier .
Construit en 1577 , il fut couronné un siècle plus tard par le gracieux poulain qui le montait. Il se trouvait à l'origine là où se trouve maintenant le Triomphe de San Rafael , mais a été déplacé à son emplacement actuel en 1847. Il semble que le nom de cette place et de la fontaine provienne du petit cheval , et on suppose également qu'il a été nommé d'après le auberge du même nom.
