La Chiers est une rivière franco-belgo-luxembourgeoise . C'est un important affluent de la Meuse en rive droite.La Chiers prend sa source sur le territoire de la commune de Differdange dans la section d'Oberkorn au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, puis passe par le coin sud-est d'Athus en Belgique où s'y déverse la Messancy. Le confluent fut construit en forme d'écluse afin de garantir l'alimentation permanente en eau de l'usine sidérurgique d'Athus pour refroidir ses hauts-fourneaux.
