Située à Mortemart, classé l'Uns des Plus Beaux Villages de France, et inscrite au monuments historiques, la motte féodale se trouve au carrefour de routes anciennes. L'une des mottes de Mortemart, symbole de la puissance de la famille Drut, témoigne de la première féodalité aux environs de l’An Mil. Abbon Drut, chevalier, seigneur de Mortemart, soutient le comte de La Marche contre le Roi de France, lors du siège de Bellac en 995. A proximité se trouvait l’église paroissiale Saint-Hilaire, détruite au début du XIXe siècle.
