La région touristique de Donegal tire son nom de la ville de Donegal, dans le sud du comté. Elle a également été connue sous le nom de comté de Tyrconnell ou Tirconaill (Tír Chonaill), d'après le territoire historique. Le comté de Donegal était le foyer des puissants Clann Dálaigh, dont la branche la plus connue était le Clann Ó Domhnaill, mieux connu en anglais sous le nom de dynastie O'Donnell. Le comté de Donegal a été l'une des régions les plus touchées d'Ulster lors de la Grande Famine de la fin des années 1840 en Irlande. D'immenses étendues du comté ont été dévastées, de nombreuses zones devenant définitivement dépeuplées. Un nombre considérable des habitants du comté de Donegal ont émigré à cette époque, principalement par le port de Foyle.
