Syracuse était le lieu de naissance du mathématicien, ingénieur, scientifique et astronome Archimède, inventeur de la vis d'Archimède. Il était également connu sous le nom d'Archimède de Syracuse.
Archimède est mort ici selon certains en 212 avant J.-C. Plutarque a déclaré qu'Archimède contemplait un diagramme mathématique lorsque la ville a été capturée. Un soldat romain lui a ordonné de venir rencontrer le général Marcellus, mais il a refusé, disant qu'il devait finir de travailler sur le problème. Le soldat a été enragé par cela et a tué Archimède de son épée.
