La basilique Sainte-Marie-Majeure dont le titre complet est « archibasilique papale majeure archiprêtre libérienne de Sainte-Marie-Majeure » ou « basilique de Liberiana » est l'une des quatre basiliques majeures de Rome, située sur la Piazza dell'Esquilino au sommet de la colline de l'Esquilin, au sommet du Cispio, entre le Monti et l'Esquilino . Elle est la seule basilique de Rome à avoir conservé sa structure paléochrétienne primitive, bien qu'enrichie par des ajouts ultérieurs. C'est le plus grand monument et la plus ancienne église romaine consacrée à la Vierge Marie. Depuis 1999, l'animation et la pastorale sont confiées aux Frères franciscains de l'Immaculée.
