Fondée au début du XIXe siècle pour les besoins des mines de fer qui venaient d'être découvertes, elle doit son nom au lac éponyme et adjacent à la ville.
Elle a accueilli deux fois les Jeux olympiques d'hiver , ainsi que les Championnats du monde de ski nordique 1950 et la coupe du monde de Skeleton et Bobsleigh 2017.
