Le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy en 1572 était un ensemble ciblé d'assassinats et une vague de violence de la part des foules catholiques, dirigée contre les Huguenots (protestants calvinistes français) durant les guerres de religion en France. Lors de cette attaque, entre 5 000 et 10 000 protestants ont été massacrés en moins de 24 heures. Lorsque le pape à Rome a entendu la nouvelle, il était si accablé de joie qu'il a organisé des prières festives pour célébrer l'occasion et a commandé à Giorgio Vasari de décorer l'une des salles du Vatican avec une fresque du massacre. La salle est actuellement interdite aux visiteurs.
