Nella rue de Lille, la via principale di Menen, gli abitanti di Menen hanno incontrato i tedeschi per la prima volta il 4 ottobre 1914. I primi uhlani sono arrivati nella città.
Durante l'occupazione, c'erano nella chiesa servizi religiosi per i cattolici e per i protestanti. Dopo un servizio protestante, il pastore passeggiava per la chiesa con una scopa e un aspersorio per disinfettarla.
All'altezza del ristorante L'époque, era stato eretto un posto di guardia tedesco con i colori rosso-nero-bianco.
Nella rue de Lille, c'era anche una mensa per gli ufficiali e al numero 63 si trovava la casa del "comandante di distretto".
