Durbuy si trova nella famosa zona calcarea del Devoniano. La zona calcarea è una stretta fascia a sud della Fagna-Famenne ed è quasi esclusivamente composta da calcare del Devoniano superiore. È proprio come un gradino per le Ardenne. Si trova a un livello molto più alto rispetto alla depressione della Fagna-Famenne. I fiumi provenienti dalle Ardenne, che attraversano questa regione, danno origine a spettacolari fenomeni di dissoluzione. Nella geologia, questi fenomeni di dissoluzione sono definiti carsismo.
