Nel 14° secolo, il Duca Giovanni II voleva ringraziare i Lierani per i loro servigi durante la sua lotta contro i Mechelaren. Scelsero il diritto di taglio sul bestiame, una scelta che non portò a Lier vantaggi, poiché in ogni regione era permesso solo uno. Così il mercato del bestiame si trasferì da Wespelaar a Lier e il duca sospirò: "Oh, quelle teste di pecora". Così nacque il soprannome 'teste di pecora' per gli abitanti di Lier.
