Il villaggio si trova alla confluenza dei fiumi Ourthe e Amblève e deve il suo nome a questo (« confluentes » – « confluent »). Comblain era già abitato nell'epoca mesolitica. Le "Scoperte di Comblain" (grotti, centro per pipistrelli, cava sotterranea, museo del Paese di Ourthe-Amblève e museo all'aperto della Torre di San Martino) meritano una visita.
