Questo castello fu costruito all'inizio del XVI secolo e successivamente passò in possesso di Jan de Luu, l'allora sindaco di Aalst. Secondo Boon, de Luu era oranje e voleva vedere la città di Aalst, di fede cattolica, cadere nelle mani dei Geuzen. Nel 1580 i Geuzen occuparono il Waterkasteel. Boon descrive il ruolo importante che il castello ebbe nella lotta dei Geuzen: da qui i Geuzen tentarono di assaltare Aalst nel novembre del 1581. Il piano fallì perché le truppe che avrebbero dovuto seguirli si erano avvicinate troppo e furono notate dalle sentinelle di Aalst.
