Si è a lungo pensato che l'albero della libertà di Morkhoven fosse stato piantato durante la Rivoluzione Brabante (1789-1791). L'albero piantato all'epoca è scomparso durante i tumultuosi eventi che seguirono. L'albero è stato molto probabilmente sostituito da un nuovo albero della libertà in occasione dell'indipendenza belga. Un'analisi specializzata degli anelli annuali mostra che la data di piantumazione dell'acero olandese emergente si colloca intorno al 1830.
