Nel XIII secolo i monaci cistercensi costruirono l'abbazia di San Bernardo a Hemiksem. Con la Rivoluzione francese, i monaci furono cacciati. L'abbazia divenne proprietà nazionale e funzionò come ospedale marittimo, prigione e deposito militare. Nell'ambito del Piano Sigma, la Benedenvliet fu isolata dal fiume Schelda e all'imboccatura fu costruita una chiusa e un bacino di pesca.
