L'area di Turnhouts Vennen è una delle più preziose aree di brughiera in Flanders e di importanza europea. Grazie agli strati di argilla superficiali, le parcelle naturali rimangono sufficientemente umide a lungo. Pertanto, qui si possono trovare specie minacciate come il piovanello, il grande curlew, il pavone di campagna, numerose libellule, farfalle variopinte e piante come l'orchidea maculata, legate a prati di brughiera caldi. Non c'è da stupirsi che proprio questi biotopi siano stati parte di due unici progetti LIFE per la natura in Europa.
