L'Eiger è una montagna svizzera delle Alpi bernesi, alta 3967 m s.l.m., situata nella regione montuosa dell'Oberland, formando assieme a Mönch e Jungfrau una triade montuosa particolarmente nota nel mondo dell'alpinismo: famosa è infatti la sua parete nord, che ha costituito uno dei principali problemi alpinistici degli anni trenta.
Il nome compare per la prima volta in un documento del 1252 . In un atto di compravendita tra Ita von Wädiswyl ed il prevosto di Interlaken si parla di un fondo "ad montem qui nominatur Egere". Circa cinquant'anni più tardi, in un beneficio, abbiamo la prima testimonianza del nome in lingua tedesca: "under Egere".
