Mechtersen è un comune dello stato della Bassa Sassonia nel comune aggregato di Bardowick nel distretto di Lüneburg. Secondo la canzone di Mechtersen, il luogo si trova “a solo un quarto d'ora” da Lüneburg e Vögelsen. Con una superficie di 14,42 km², è il terzo più grande comune nella comunità aggregata, ma ha anche con circa 650-700 abitanti il numero più piccolo di abitanti. I nomi più antichi sono probabilmente Mechtrikeshusen, Mechtriksen e Mechtenhusen.
I contadini di Mechtersen praticavano già all'inizio la raccolta di terra vegetale nel nord del comune e nel comune limitrofo di Radbruch. Inoltre, nel sud si trova una cava di marna, dalla quale i Mechterser si rifornivano fino al XX secolo. La marna veniva utilizzata per migliorare i terreni acidi.
